Made in Taiwan

Made in Taiwan is a traveling design studio led by Rosalyne Shieh and Thomas Moran. A collaboration between the University of Michigan's Taubman College and NCKU, the studio will explore the phenomenon of informal urbanism in Taiwan exemplified by Taiwan's famous night markets.

night life:

On top of a residential building that features apartments and a youth hostel in downtown Taipei a group of us came across this spectacular roof space.  What was strange was it’s seemingly lack of use.  While in the US any roof top space is coveted, let alone one which has been actually fitted for social use (seating, lights, garden, etc).  In two visits to this space we never encountered another person.

night life:

At first glance much of urban Taiwan appears to be like of a city that never sleeps.  With the culture of the night markets where entire families take part in late night shopping, eating, and socializing it might appear that there is an abundance of activities 24 hours of the day.  However the night markets typically close down around midnight, which coincides with the time that public trains end service (Taipei and Kaohsiung).  Once this takes places people tend to disappear back into their homes rather then find other late evening entertainment (bars and clubs are not easy to find) leaving the previously bustling cities quiet.

junk space:
Because of the incredible density within Taipei it was rare to find a space that wasn’t being used in some way.  Most spaces fulfilled multiple uses through various parts of the day.  For example; shops would use the space in front of their store to display goods during the day and then often rent it out to night vendors, complete with water and electric.  This was one of the very few pockets in Taipei that went neglected.
